New research reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
