TikTok Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

Based on the social media company, the service has removed problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Activities

Research also found communities with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.

After minutes of entering one community, a seller posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Details and Costs

Inside these communities, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may subject users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
