Josh Allen Sacked 8 Times as Late Pickoff Dooms Bills in Loss to Texans

Very little went right for Josh Allen in a tough contest on Thursday evening versus the Houston Texans.

Yet he came close to driving the Buffalo Bills to a victory before an late pick in the final minute ended their hopes in a 23-19 loss.

Allen took back-to-back sacks on the team's last drive, resulting in a fourth-and-27, but the Bills (with seven wins) picked up significant yardage on a short pass from Allen to a receiver, who flipped a backward pass to another teammate.

After a false-start penalty led to a fourth down situation for the Bills, a Texans defender picked off the quarterback's pass at the 9-yard line with 24 seconds left.

We possessed a chance to win it there at the end,” Allen said. “We did a good job of staying in it and our defense bailed us out a few instances. We must find a way, and unfortunately we failed.”

It was tough for Allen to establish rhythm on a evening he was sacked a personal-worst eight times and pressured four additional instances. The QB threw for 253 passing yards with a pair of picks and zero scores after accounting for six TDs in a win over Tampa Bay the previous week.

Whenever they pressure our QB 12 times, I don’t like that,” Bills coach Sean McDermott commented. “I don’t like that statistic at all. It is not a healthy way to play and it’s not a smart way to preserve our field general in good shape for the remaining games. We’ve got to play better.”

Josh Allen was slow to get up after a sack in the opening two quarters. He said he was fine and that his left shoulder “went a little numb” after he fell on it in an awkward manner. He was asked about being hit so many times during the game.

“It’s not fun,” he said. “I encountered a couple myself. I need to be more effective at disposing of the football. On multiple occasions, I was going backwards.”

Allen lost 70 total yards on the eight quarterback takedowns. Anderson had 2.5 sacks to lead the Houston defense. Another sack came when he nearly sacked the QB near the line of scrimmage, but he escaped and the defender got up and chased him downfield to drop him for an 18-yard deficit to force a punt early in the third.

Buffalo played for a second straight game absent receiver Coleman after he was once more a non-participant after he was tardy to a squad gathering before their last game. He was previously benched for the opening drive of a loss to the Patriots in Week 5 after also being delayed for a meeting.

No change. We’re just taking it one day at a time,” the coach noted. “I felt he had a improved week, but we are taking it one day at a time. It was not that it was ignored, but we opted for the players that give us the best chance.”

Khalil Shakir led the Bills with eight receptions for 110 yards and Cook had 116 yards and a score.

Allen was disappointed that the team couldn’t make plays in crucial moments.

In the end, we’ve got perform, and we failed to do a good job of that this evening,” he said. “No matter the scenario and any condition, we need to find a way, and we didn’t.”
